who are we?

O Cable Inglés (The English Cable) is born with the idea to give answer to cultural demands in an integral way. Our aim is to propose custom-made cultural solutions, that are able to integrate as many services as necessary to carry to good term each cultural experience.

We rescue our name from one of the most unknown episodes of the History of Galicia, but also one of the most fruitful ones from a social, cultural and economic point of view. This happened in 1873, when the ETC Eastern Telegraph Company settled in the city of Vigo to tend the first submarine telegraph cable that linked the European continent to the rest of the world. During over a century Vigo was the entrance to Europe for all the great internacional events. In the skirts of the mountain of El Castro the British community settled and for over one hundred years they transformed the dynamics of the city and made huge contributions to our cultural heritage. The English Cable also brought football, tennis, beer and Porto's wine, but above all culture.
Under the sea Galicia was connected to the world.

In 2012 O Cable Inglés Cultural Coop. rescues this part of our memory as a metaphor to create and communicate culture. Joining the background of three professionals specialized in management, productionn, design and communication, O Cable Inglés offers an Integral management of sustainable cultural projects that are involved with the territory and its inhabitants.

Tira do Cable (Tie the cable) is an open process willing to join stories, anecdotes, experiences, documents, photos, films and any other testimony of the presence of the English Cable in Vigo and in Galicia.

This is our foundational project guided by our own interest and curiosity, and as a way of writing our town's history.

Let us know each other better rebuilding all together one of the most unknown and yet memorable episodes of our recent history. This is our aim.

Do you want to help tie the cable?

Women are not made of porcelain. The violet struggle of the Alvarez factory workers. For many decades, at the already closed porcelain factory of Alvarez, hundreds of women workers where committed to their gender and to their labor struggle. They were organized and informed, and they guided a protest march to fight for their rights as workers and women. They persecuted equality and social justice courageously, but as it often happens with women stories, their work and effort was forgotten and filed away.

Our aim is to remember this part of our industrial memory through the testimonies of the women workers themselves. The result will be an exhibition and an editorial project.

The project is open to any contributions
